Fluorescein strips are small, paper-based diagnostic strips saturated with a fluorescent dye called fluorescein sodium. They are used by eye care professionals to identify damage or irregularities on the surface of the eye. 

How they work

• A healthcare professional moistens the tip of a sterile strip with saline or an anesthetic.
• They gently touch the strip against the inside of the patient's lower eyelid (the conjunctiva).
• The patient then blinks to spread the orange dye across the tear film that coats the eye's surface.
• When viewed under a special cobalt blue light from a slit lamp, damaged or missing cells on the cornea or conjunctiva absorb the dye and glow a vivid green, revealing any issues.
